What type of license? If the license is required by law, you have no other choice. If the license will make you more qualified for the job, and there is no contract, you have no other choice. You're the one receiving the paycheck, not writing it.
Besides, why wouldn't you want to acquire a license? It makes you more competitive and looks more professional.

What type of license are you talking about? If its a drivers license no they cannot force you but they can require a valid ID with a photo. Normally and social security card and a birth certificate will do it for you.

Unless you have a contract with the company, you are basically what is known as a free will employee. That means they can let you go for whatever reason they may see fit, as long as they are not discriminating against a class of employees when they do so.
